When to tap maple trees
Maple sap runs when nights freeze and days thaw. Timing shifts by region and year.
Freeze-thaw is the signal
Classic sap-flow weather is overnight temperatures below freezing and daytime highs above about 40°F (4°C). Trees recharge in the cold and push sap when the wood thaws.
Season timing
Southern maple regions often tap earlier; Quebec and northern New England usually peak later. Watch the forecast for several freeze-thaw days in a row rather than a single warm afternoon.
- Tap before the first strong run if you can — missed early days are hard to recover.
- Warm nights and muddy thaws late in the season often mean the run is ending.
- Use a regional 7-day outlook to plan collections, then log what your bush actually does.
